Hans Severin Nyborg
Hans Severin Nyborg has until recently been almost completely unknown, except for the two signed double-deckers that he made and can be found in the collections of the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts and the Gothenburg City Museum respectively. It has been speculated that he was an amateur luthier, although Bengt Nilsson admits that he had privileges in the 1760s. Hans Severin Nyberg uti Örkelljunga 1760 and Norra Åsbo Härad Ryå skn, Eket 1768 Hans Nyborg is the text on the labels in the violins. There is quite a lot of information in the church records for Örkelljunga and Rya Parish but until now nobody has bothered to investigate this.
"On Friday, October 29, the Wiolin maker Master Hans Sewerin Nÿborg from LandzCrona was married to the daughter of the bell ringer Hörning, the maiden Elizabet Hörning from Örkeliunga. The banns of marriage was agreed July 4th 1756."
Nyborg is listed as Master and as a violin maker, which indicates that he is educated and professional. At the birth of her daughter, the apprentice Johan Saxe is named as a witness, and although it is not clearly stated, one can guess that Saxe is an apprentice to Nyborg.
On December 30th 1759 the Wiolin Maker's Master Hans Sewerin Nÿborg's and his wife Elisabet Hörning's little daughter were born at Siöborg, and on January 1st 1760 she was baptized with the name Ingeborg Maria. Witnesses were Sir Hierner from Hishult, the apprentice Johan Saxe from Landscrona, his brother Sewerin Saxe, Miss Adelhed Wogea in Prästegården and Ulrika Malena Hörning in Örkell:a

"On 21 October 1769, the reading began for the wiollmaker Call Johan Broberg from Giötteborg and the maid Ullrika Magdalena Hörning in Örkeliunga. Married 23 Now.".
Both Elisabet and Ulrika Magdalena Hörning's parents are named Anders Hörning and Elisabet Lindberg and they are sisters, which means that Hans Severin Nyborg is the brother-in-law of the well-known violin maker in Gothenburg Carl Johan Broberg. Broberg was born in Munka-Ljungby and was an apprentice to Jöran Mothe from 1759 to 1765. It is not far fetched to assume that Broberg and Nyborg knew each other. There is information the records from Ängelholm that Jöran Mothe, son of Johan Georg Mothe had an apprentice 1751-1754 named Hans (no family name specified). It is very likely that this Hans is Hans Severin Nyborg and that he got to know Broberg during the time in Mothes workshop and that the two friends later married a daughter to bell ringer Hörning. This new information connects Hans Severin Nyborg to a cluster of violin makers based in Ängelholm, which includes Rönnegren, the Mothe clan, Nyborg and Carl Johan Broberg. Production of double-deckers seems to have been important for these guys and out of the 21 preserved instruments from this cluster, 9 are double-deckers.
Hans Severin Nyborg had three children: Johan Magnus Hansson (born 1757 at Stora Hag's building), Ingeborg Maria Hansdotter (born 1759 at Sjöborg) and Severin Hansson (born 1762 at Sjöborg). He died on 14 February 1774 in Eket, Rya parish. His wife Elisabeth died in 1807.
